concept.
An interactive p5.js work built around the pairing Critiquing + The Night. The scene begins in
blackout: dark houses, a full star field, and a sky carrying the atmosphere. From there, the experience
asks what happens when artificial light becomes the dominant way to experience night.
interaction.
The viewer activates the scene by clicking the houses. Each click turns on more windows and moves the
scene further from darkness. As domestic lights accumulate, the stars fade and the sky shifts. The
interaction stays simple so each consequence remains clear.
visual and audio design.
The piece uses a stylized residential nightscape with a moon, star field, horizon glow, house
silhouettes, and ambient sound. Code controls gradual transitions in star visibility, sky pollution,
house lighting, and atmospheric motion, including shooting stars and audio shifts. The layered response
keeps the scene alive while focusing attention on what excess light takes away.
reflection.
The project questions the assumption that more light automatically means more progress or safety. It
asks viewers to notice what disappears when brightness becomes the standard: stars, sky texture, and the
quieter experience of night. Creative coding becomes a direct way to connect environmental atmosphere
with visual storytelling.
